08 May The 2017 Maine Songwriter’s Circle
Each year the All Roads Music Festival serves as home to the annual Maine Songwriter’s Circle, sponsored by Bangor Savings Bank a showcase of the often overlooked talents of the singer-songwriter. The event invites six Maine-based songwriter’s to perform and share stories of their creative process. This year’s event will include performances by Sonia Sturino (Weakened Friends), Travis Cyr, Kenya Hall (Kenya Hall Music), Anna Pillsbury, Loretta Allen (OHX), and Luke Mallett (The Mallett Brothers Band).
“We got the idea from an event we attended a few years back at the East Coast Music Awards in Prince Edward Island. Atlantic Canada has a strong scene and appreciation for the singer-songwriter, and I realized that Maine is very similar. When I got home I started to write a list of all these amazing songwriter’s working in Maine, some of them in bands, some of them solo artists, but all of them writing these incredible lyrics and songs and I realized we didn’t have enough room for them all in one event!” explains Festival Director, Meg Shorette. “That’s when I realized this was going to have to be an annual event, to really give opportunities to highlight all of these talented musicians.”
Shorette and festival co-founder, Joshua Gass, feel the event is something that helps the Festival stand out from others. “Anything we can do to put the spotlight on these musicians I’m behind,” explains Gass, “we did it the first year and I was like ‘no one is coming to this’ – I told all the available Volunteers they had to go sit in the audience, but it didn’t matter, the place was packed without them and everyone left the Colonial raving about the performers.” That’s when the organizers knew they had tapped into something special.
Presenting sponsor for the event, Bangor Savings Bank, was an easy addition with their organizations history of supporting local music including their Maine Tracks program featuring local music artists, including past Songwriter’s Circle participant Dave Gutter of Rustic Overtones and current participant Luke Mallett of the The Mallett Brothers Band.
You can attend this performance at The Colonial Theatre in Belfast at 1pm on Saturday, May 20th. The event is open to all pass holders on a first come, first serve basis. Individual tickets are available as space allows.Buy Tickets
